First Time Home Buyers Take Note

March 2011

First I would like to congratulate VCU on their accomplishment this past weekend. I was one of “those” people. I was one of the ones saying they didn’t belong. They were taking a spot that should have gone to someone else. Boy did they prove me wrong!

After watching them completely dismantle Purdue, I reflected on some of the comments I had made earlier in the week and I couldn’t help but think how this story, while it is still in the making, could relate to first time homebuyers.

You see first time home buyers often find themselves in the same position that this upstart VCU team was. Often times they find themselves surrounded by people who mean well (or at least certainly don’t mean them any harm), but offer up plenty of reasons why they couldn’t or shouldn’t pursue their dream. First time home buyers will often hear things like “it’s not the right time to buy”, or “aren’t you worried about the economy”. The excitement of your research of the market soon gives way to trepidation, which soon gives way to fear, which can soon give way to waking up in a cold sweat and afternoon panic attacks! (Ok…maybe not quite that severe)

Just imagine if the VCU players had listened to all of us who doubted them. What would have been the outcome if they had studied the game films and concluded that everybody else was right? After all, a team with the history of success like Georgetown is surely going to win against a team like VCU. And while they might have caught Georgetown off guard, surely lightning won’t strike twice.

Well it wasn’t lightning striking twice. VCU proved that they deserve the success they are experiencing. They earned it. Nobody gave it to them, and nobody can take it away. What can a first time homebuyer take away from this run? I’ll tell you:

  1. Have a plan: There’s an abundance of truth in the statement most people don’t plan to fail, they fail to plan.
  2. Study the game film: Do your homework. Research and gather information so you can make educated and informed decisions.
  3. Believe you can: All of your research and planning will be for naught if you don’t believe you can achieve your dreams.

If you have questions about the market or how you can purchase a home email me or give me a call. I’m always happy to help. Good luck to the VCU Rams and good luck to you!
