My Power Went Out and Its Cold Outside!

February 2011

WOW! If you’re a fan of roller coasters, then you’ll love the weather in Katy. One minute its sunny and 70 degrees, the next its grey, rainy, and in the 30’s! The unusually cold temperatures have really thrown us, and ERCOT, a curve. If a power outage due to a downed power line didn’t get you, then a rolling blackout (curious about who gets volunteered and who doesn’t…take a peek here) probably did. While there isn’t a whole lot we can do about downed lines and “voluntary” outages, there are some things we can do to make life just a little more enjoyable and/or safe while we wait.

  1. Make sure you have plenty of food and water on hand. No…I’m not saying you need to stock up like its Armageddon, even though it might feel like it. You do need to be prepared for an unforeseen candlelight dinner. Make sure you have some food on hand that doesn’t require a lot of preparation. Trail mix and beef jerky go a long way when you’re snacking in the dark.
  2.  Keep the refrigerator/freezer door closed. What you have stored will stay cold for quite a while, as long as you keep the door closed. There’s nothing wrong with the occasional raid to get some supplies, but try to keep those to a minimum.
  3. Have plenty of candles and batteries on hand. The same basic essentials for your hurricane kit come in handy during a winter storm. Make sure you keep an eye on the candles, and place them in a safe area away from curtains or other flammables. If you are fortunate enough to have a generator, make sure it is in a well ventilated area and away from intakes into your home.
  4. Unplug electronic devices that could be damaged by a power surge. Protect your computers, big screen televisions, etc.

These things won’t keep the cold temps away, but it will make them more bearable. And just remember…this too shall pass. That’s the great part about our weather in Katy/Houston. If you don’t like it, just wait a couple of minutes…it’ll change. Be safe and stay warm.
