Saving Money With Homemade Household Cleaners

September 28, 2010

In these economic times we’re all keeping a close eye on the market and trying to figure out where we can save a buck or two. Stretching the dollar can sometimes be tough, but we’ve discovered a way you can ease some tension on your household budget. Homemade cleaning products can help you save money and eliminate toxic chemicals from the environment.

Some figures show that you can spend up to $1200 a year on household cleaners. There’s a lot of room there to trim, but we don’t want you to throw in the towel on cleaning your home. There was a time when people made their own household cleaners for a fraction of what we spend today. Baking soda can make a great household cleaner, stain remover, and deodorizer.

There are some things to remember when using baking soda as a cleaning agent. First off, while it is a great cleaning product, you don’t want to use it on porous surfaces like wood. Second, you want to be certain that you label any bottles that contain your cleaning solution. Include the ingredients and be sure to place in big letters that it is not for consumption. You might want to include the solution’s intended use.

Here are some ideas for using baking soda as a cleaner in your home:

  • Shake a little baking soda on a damp sponge and you can clean and deodorize the surfaces in your kitchen and bathroom. Always rinse thoroughly.
  • Add 2-4 tablespoons of baking soda in a spray bottle filled with a quart of warm water for a liquid cleaner and deodorizer to use on fixtures, stainless steel, chrome, fiberglass, ceramic, porcelain or enamel and other non-porous surfaces.
  • Keeping and open box of baking soda in your refrigerator will eliminate odors. You can also sprinkle it in a garbage pail or bag to help keep odors down.

I’m sure you all have a few tricks up your sleeve when it comes to saving money on household products, and I would love to hear about them. Just send an email to me at stacy@jonesteamonline.com with the subject line money saver, and I’ll be sure to share your ideas here. As always, I hope this helps.
