What Are You Waiting For?
Home ownership, it’s the American dream. But lately we’ve heard so much negative that a lot of people are thinking that this dream is more like a nightmare. Turn on the news, pick up a paper (they still have those things…right?), or glance at your IPhone or IPad and you’ll see plenty of reasons to believe that the dream was just a fairy tale.
I for one, stopped watching the news and listening to the doom and gloom reports because, at the end of the day, they are just sensationalized hype. They are an attempt to draw you in and keep you watching. It’s the same psychology being folks slowing down to observe a wreck. We just can’t seem to help ourselves. I disagree with those out there that would tell you that you were fed a line about the American dream. I disagree with those that say a home is not a good investment.
I know…I know; about now you’re saying to yourself “of course you disagree. You’re a Realtor; what else would you say”. My answer is this…expect the truth. I built my reputation and my business on it, and without straight forward honest answers I would be one of the many that were casualties to the “Great Correction”. Let me give you a couple of things to think about.
There is a stability that comes from home ownership
That’s right; there is a certain intangible feeling that comes from home ownership. It comes from being a part of a community, the sum being greater than its parts. Home ownership contributes to folks getting more involved in their communities and increases the feeling of belonging to something bigger.
Historically real estate is a great investment
Prices go up and prices go down. The market gets hot and the market cools off. While there are cycles, and there are no guarantees, overall the trend is for your investment to go up. Don’t believe me? Ask your parents or, better yet, your grandparents what they paid for when they purchased their homes. Here are the basics to consider. Our population is on the rise and we aren’t making any more land. These fundamental facts, while they are quite basic, would indicate that land will continue to become more and more scarce.
Here come the nay sayers. But there are so many homes on the market right now, with fewer buyers out there, and what about the shadow inventory? What do you have to say about that? Here’s your answer…we are in a correction. The market was hot, really hot from 2004-2006, and real estate is a lot like a pendulum. When you swing far one way you can expect to swing just as far in the opposite direction. This is not the end of the real estate market. We will always need shelter, and we always follow periods of a shrinking economy with periods of growth.
So what are you waiting for?
I say the time to buy is right now. I can’t emphasize enough…RIGHT NOW! Warren Buffet said it best. “When people get greedy, I get nervous. When people get nervous, I get greedy.” Are you waiting for folks to get more nervous? What about rates…are you waiting for them to fall lower? Looking for home values to fall some more? Don’t be one of the masses that find themselves saying “I wish I had…”
